Goals/Purpose:

To quantify the interests of US consumers in liposuction procedures, determine the key drivers of aesthetic body contouring and explore the concerns and issues associated with this treatment.

Methods/Technique:

An online survey was sent by ICOM, a division of Epsilon Targeting, to 1,293,643 U.S. adults who are members of the Shopper’s Voice panel. The survey was in the field from August 19th to August 31st 2011. Participants were recruited from households with income greater than $50,000 and were 25-55 years of age. Overall survey response rate was 2.1%, with 21,509 meeting these selection criteria, making this the largest consumer lipoplasty survey ever reported.

Results/Complications:

93% of US adults indicated that it is important to look and feel good, while 76% often think about their body shape. Only 43% are satisfied with their body shape, and 92% responded that they would change at least one part of their body.  The most sought after changes were for the stomach, thighs and love handle body areas.

Liposuction market potential is significant; more than 7 times those who have actually had a liposuction procedure are actively considering treatment. According to this survey, overall satisfaction with liposuction procedures is 67%; dissatisfaction was tied mostly to unmet aesthetic expectation. Of those previously treated, 59% of them would consider another liposuction procedure.

An ideal liposuction procedure would provide the expected aesthetic results, with short recovery time, minimal pain and no thrusting of the cannula. Additionally, 71% of US adults would consult a Plastic Surgeon for their liposuction procedure.

Conclusion:

Liposuction procedures deliver satisfaction to large numbers of consumers with opportunities for improvement. There is significant potential for continued procedural growth. The majority of US adults would expect to consult Plastic Surgeons for this procedure.
